It’s been fun counting down my top blog posts of the year as the sun sets on 2014. It was a unique year of blogging between a stable life in California and an anything-but-stable life on the road. Interestingly enough, all five of my most read posts of the year came from that former time of stability.
In case you missed any of my countdown, here’s a quick rundown of the top-4:
At #5, it was “Donald Miller Hates Going to Church and I Do Too.”
At #4, it was “Why I’m Sad and Why I Might Run Away.”
At #3, it was “I’m an Enneagram Type 4: An Introduction.”
And at #2, it was “The Real Reason Why I’ve Never Dated.”
Which now brings me to my #1 blog post of the year. But first, let me give you some perspective. With respect to my #2 post which received about 3% of my blog’s overall hits, my #1 post received 45%.
In short, this post was a runaway. Nothing else came close.
It’s a post from February 10, and it’s called “The Girl Who Sings ‘Oceans’ by Hillsong United.”
Hillsong United’s “Oceans” took the world by storm last year. The song broke all kinds of Christian and mainstream records, and it was my instant favorite off Hillsong United’s Zion album.
But the song seemed intriguingly shrouded in mystery. You wanna know the biggest Google search that led to my blog this year?
It was some variation of: WHAT’S THE NAME OF THAT GIRL WHO SINGS OCEANS?
That particular Google search happened enough times, so I finally decided to blog about the topic and connect it with my own questions of identity. It was a vital lesson in SEO and site “Googleability” as my blog traffic increased like never before. I learned that if people are coming to your site looking for something, it’s wise to give it to them.
In this case, it was my #1 post of 2014 by a mile.

Ever since I posted a revamped Hillsong United countdown, some of the most popular Google searches leading to my blog go like this:
who sings oceans hillsong
what girl sings oceans hillsong united
who is the lady singer oceans hillsong
So, to answer the question that myriads have been asking the Internet: her name is Taya Smith.
She is known around the world as the girl who sings the Hillsong United mega-hit, “Oceans.” The song recently made history by becoming Billboard’s first “Hot Christian” song to break into the more encompassing, more illustrious Hot 100.
It’s become one of my favorite songs of all-time, Hillsong-inspired or otherwise. Indeed, “Oceans” hasexploded around the world. And yet people still wonder:
Who’s the girl who sings it?
